Since Rifle’s New Ute Events Center opened about a year ago, it has hosted one big band: the Symphony in the Valley Big Band for its New Year’s Eve celebration.

The Glenn Miller Orchestra isn’t a bad follow-up.

The legendary group will perform at the New Ute Events Center at 7:30 p.m. today. Tickets are $35 and can be purchased at bit.ly/1LzMAB2.

“The idea of seeing that band in that old retro theater is the coolest thing ever,” said Don Chaney, cultural and special events manager for the city of Rifle. “And Rifle really supports good family entertainment.”

Chaney said big band music is some of his favorite, and he hopes parents bring their kids out so youngsters can hear what great popular music used to sound like.

Though Glenn Miller died in 1944, this iteration of the Glenn Miller Orchestra started in 1956. The big band group keeps alive such standards as “In the Mood,” “Moonlight Serenade,” “Little Brown Jug,” “Caribbean Clipper,” “Pennsylvania 6-5000,” “Chattanooga Choo Choo,” “A String of Pearls” and countless more that Miller made famous.
