Starbucks’ temp closure over safety concerns

Starbucks Coffee Co. on Wednesday said it wanted to clarify the reason behind the temporary closure of its 2115 Grand Ave. location in Glenwood Springs, saying it’s not related to health and safety issues per se, but rather needed building improvements.

“We are working to make improvements to the store in order to deliver the highest standard of customer experience, and we realized that there were some things that needed to be fixed,” Starbucks spokeswoman Laurel Harper said in a follow-up statement Wednesday.

“In order to do so without interruption to our employees or customers, we decided to temporarily close the store,” she said. “We are looking forward to welcoming customers soon but do not have a timeline to share yet.”

Earlier this week, Starbucks indicated that the store closure, first involving just the indoor cafe portion of the store late last week and expanded to include the drive-through facility on Tuesday, was the result of an ongoing “health and safety inspection.”

The store was also closed briefly earlier this summer. Specific concerns around the recently renovated building were not stated, but Harper said a third-party vendor was called in to do an inspection.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, which is in charge of restaurant safety inspections in Glenwood Springs, is not involved.

Garfield County public health officials also said no complaints have been filed with the county regarding any health concerns associated with the Starbucks in question.

While the drive-through was kept open initially, the decision was made to close it temporarily as well in order complete the necessary building improvements in a timely manner, Harper said.

She could not elaborate on the specific improvements being made to the building.

Glenwood’s newest Starbucks-owned location, the 2115 Grand store replaced the former Arby’s restaurant at the site after extensive remodeling of the building last summer. The store opened in September.

In the meantime, Starbucks is steering customers to other company-owned stores and licensed counter locations in Glenwood Springs. Those include the stand-alone store on Market Street at Glenwood Meadows, as well as Starbucks locations in City Market, Safeway and Target.
