Glenwood’s Downtown Market poised to wrap up another season

Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. will be the last Glenwood Downtown Market for 2013.
The market’s ninth season has been a summer celebration of local organic foods, cooking demonstrations, music, a pie contest, 4th of July fun and artisans.
This week’s farmers are still filling their tables with produce, jams and flowers. It’s a good time to buy meat from Roan Creek. Eagle Smoked Salmon’s smoked trout can be easily frozen for later. Honey, coffee and artisan items make great local gift items.
In the market booth, we can still double the value of your SNAP benefits, to be used for fresh foods. WIC vouchers will also be taken by our produce vendors. Thanks to Slow Food Roaring Fork many valley residents with SNAP benefits have been able to buy fresh, local fruits, vegetables and meats at the market. Garfield County has helped the WIC clients, veterans facility and care center to bring fresh vegetables to their tables.
This week, in our market booth, we will be selling several items at half price. Our balsamic vinegar and other sauces will be available at Confetti Design, at Eighth and Grand Avenue, through the winter months. We also have Downtown Market gift certificates for next season.
At last week’s market the market board sold popcorn along with burgers and brats. Even in the rain, it was a success. We will be donating the proceeds to small scale farmers on the front range that have lost their crops due to the flooding.
Grab a bag of popcorn and enjoy The Smuggler Mountain Boys in the park. The Boys will be playing bluegrass from the early 20th century to the modern bluegrass of the 21st century. The band has played together in the valley for parties, weddings and nightlife. The musicians are Craig Snow on guitar, Doug D’Autrechy on mandolin, Brennan Buckley on banjo, Dave Notor on dobro and Mike Leavy on bass. The music sponsor this week is Glenwood Medical Associates.
Near the music tent, in the park, is Betts Williams’ booth. Betts is a Reiki master and nationally certified massage therapist. She has helped many market goers this summer to slow down and relax for the evening. Betts also provides pet Reiki therapy and healing. Stop by her booth to pick up information for you and your pet.

Saturday, Sept. 28, noon till 7 p.m., Glenwood’s Downtown Market brings Oktoberfest to 9th and Grand Avenue. The Missing Link Band will provide the entertainment from noon till 3 p.m. and Alpine Echo’s Bavarian music will fill the street from 3:30-7 p.m. The autumn party will feature brews from Glenwood Canyon Brewing Co.
Autumn is a good time to add a new cookbook to your collection. Alice Waters wrote “The Art of Simple Food” in 2007. This October, “The Art of Simple Food 2” will be available. We want to leave you with thoughts from Alice Waters to end our season. “Eat locally and sustainably. Eat seasonally. Shop at farmers’ market. Plant a garden. Conserve, compost and recycle. Cook simple, engaging all your senses. Cook together. Eat together. Remember food is precious.”
