Whit’s End: Let tourist season begin
May 18, 2017
Glenwood Canyon Brewpub was packed Saturday night. The doors were open and patrons basked in the still-warm evening light. My friend and I snagged two chairs at the bar as another group left. Other people gathered around to order a drink while they waited for a table.
Sometimes I forget this is a tourist town.
I shouldn't lose sight so quickly; my own calendar is quickly filling with guests. Next week my parents kick off what I expect to be a summer-long run of visitors. Officially, their visit is prompted by my need for furniture. They'll leave Florida en route for Alabama, where they'll visit family and load a truck with my belongings. They'll then traverse the country over the course of four days before unloading 366 cubic feet of stuff in my tiny Carbondale apartment.
Yes, I am loved.
The real fun will be the week they spend here. We'll stroll through the neighborhood for breakfast at the Village Smithy. Dad has already requested we take in a show at Steve's Guitars. We'll explore area attractions — Mom's been researching Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park — and spend a little time in Aspen. Of course, I'll set aside plenty of time for reading; I come by my bookworm ways honestly.
Two weeks after my parents leave, Luke will arrive in search of hiking and biking and Strawberry Days. (OK, maybe he doesn't yet know the latter is part of what he seeks.) Melissa will slip into town in early July for yoga and climbing. Meredith follows immediately thereafter as part of her annual summer road trip. Come late July, my college roommates Paula and Apryl Marie will visit, the latter with her two children in tow. I can already hear Mountain Fair calling our names.
Each of these guests will require at least slightly different activities. Some itch for the outdoors. Others will prefer to browse local boutiques. Everyone will make time for a hot springs visit.
Despite this week's snow, summer is near. Let's swing open the doors and welcome it — and its visitors —in.
