The Glenwood Farmers Market is beginning its 30th season of bringing fine fruits, vegetables, honey, jam, grass-fed beef and homemade bread to the parking lot between Rite-Aid and the Executive Plaza on Saturdays.

The farmers have been busy this spring: The dry, windy season has led to additional time and effort to keep the crops watered and growing, and the bulk of the first hay crop is in the stack. The early season local weather varied by location a great deal, and while some areas lost large amounts of fruits to frost, others had the opportunity to replant their crops.

The shiny red skin of cherries beckons us as we walk by. Cherries are packed with juice and fiber, have no cholesterol and are full of antioxidants. How could one not enjoy these varieties of natural candy?

The season’s few apricots can be found in several different jams so that their flavor can be enjoyed for months to come.

Early Garfield County peas and greens, beeswax and candles are available along with Flat Tops wildflower honey, bee pollen and alfalfa clover honey.

The Grand Junction growers bring us the first summer squash, garlic, new potatoes, rhubarb, onions, carrots and many jars of canned produce to complete our shopping lists for the weekend.

These fruits and vegetables can be eaten fresh, canned, frozen, dried, or made into jam or jelly for savoring at a later date.

Kaleb’s Katch is pleased to bring us a fine selection of freshly frozen, sustainably caught Alaskan salmon.

Farmer Dave has a fantastic early season selection of grass-fed beef and pork.

Grilling season is here, and while some of us just grill, home smokers can help create a masterpiece in your own backyard. No longer is brisket the only option: a chuck roast, pork roast and ribs all become an enjoyable option in addition to hamburgers and steaks for our family gatherings.
