Student Spotlight: Ricky Perez

Choir students from eighth through 12th grade will perform from 7-8 p.m. next Wednesday, Oct. 19, at Basalt Middle School, 51 School St. Among them is Ricky Perez, a Basalt High School senior and bass or baritone. He recently sat down with the Post Independent to discuss his passion for performance.

How did you get into choir?

I love singing. It’s my favorite thing to do. I started in seventh grade choir over at the middle school. Eighth grade choir was an option, and I decided to take it. I auditioned for chamber choir, which is the advanced choir here, and I got in and loved it.

What is it about it that appeals?

Music itself is so beautiful. It can have so many meanings to different people. Sometimes I can relate to it myself. Singing for other people is a way of getting personal without really trying to.

When did you get into musicals?

Freshman year. We had the best directors, and they really got down to the details, which just opened my eyes to the beauty of music and dance and choreography to tell a story.

What have you learned since then.

Of course, my singing has improved a lot. I’ve learned many different ways to see music. I’ve noticed how music reflects what’s happening in society or in a person. Even the concerts we put on do that. Our upcoming show will reflect a day, from a beautiful morning to the dark of night. It will also touch on what’s going on around our world.

Any other interests you’d like to share?

I usually do football, but this year I couldn’t because I had too many concussions. This last one took me out of school for almost a month, but honestly I still wanted to play. It was a big part of my life. It’s understandable; I need to keep my head. I’m hoping to do track this spring, and I’ve been trying to keep in shape more. I’d like to start a career in modeling, as well.

Are you at all intimidated by performing in front of people?

I’ve been in front of crowds for a long time. It’s been a growing experience to not care if I mess up. Everyone does it here or there.

What’s next after high school?

I’m planning to audition for a few colleges. I’m really looking at Santa Fe University of Art and Design, and I would like to major in musical theater. If not, I at least want to keep music in my life.
