DUI crackdown is on for St. Paddy’s Day holiday
March 15, 2014
The Colorado Department of Transportation is warning drivers about heightened DUI enforcement now through Tuesday morning, as part of their “The Heat is On” campaign. St. Patrick’s Day is one of 12 annual holidays identified by CDOT for extra enforcement due to high risk of DUIs, with 90 agencies participating.
Last year, Colorado law enforcement made 486 DUI arrests over the course of St. Patrick’s Day weekend, including three by the Glenwood Springs Police Department.
“We were pleased to see that there were no fatalities last year during the enforcement period and hope that trend continues this year,” Col. Scott Hernandez, chief of the Colorado State Patrol, said in a press release, “We want everyone to know that you will get caught if you make the dangerous decision to get behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol, marijuana or any other drugs.”
CDOT is also currently running a “Drive High, Get a DUI” campaign to inform the public that operating a vehicle under the influence of marijuana is also cause for arrest.
