Four Mile Road work gets under way this week
February 23, 2014
Garfield County is set to begin construction on road safety improvements in the so-called “dead man’s curve” section of County Road 117 (Four Mile Road), creating impacts for motorists during the eight-month duration of the project, county officials announced on Friday.
“Information on delays, lane closures, heavy roadside traffic and increased daytime noise levels at times will be available in a number of locations to assist those impacted,” according to a county news release. “Motorists are asked to use caution in the area for safety of themselves, road workers and other drivers.”
The county has hired Gould Construction to complete the $3.75 million project. Work will include a new bridge and realignment of the intersection at County Road 126 (Black Diamond Mine Road), just south of the Dry Park Road turnoff.
Construction will also involve work to straighten the curve in that section, which will impact a large rock formation
“The decision to reconstruct the road has been in the making for over seven years,” Garfield County Commission Chairman John Martin said in the release. “The safety improvements will improve the line of sight for motorists, it will widen the bridge to improve congestion, and will stabilize the head gate and irrigation that are now located under the Black Diamond bridge.”
In the meantime, nearby residents are advised that they may experience noise from related drilling, and there will be intermittent traffic delays for those using the road. There will also be trucks and heavy equipment entering and exiting the road.
Concrete forming is planned in late February and early March. Traffic delay times are expected to increase later in March.
Weekly updates and travel information will be posted on the Garfield County website at http://www.garfield-county.com/four-mile.aspx, as well as aired on KMTS radio and printed in the Glenwood Springs Post Independent.
Electronic message boards will also be used along Four Mile Road to give construction status and traffic delay information.
