Glenwood Springs bridge lane closures start Thursday

Staff report

GLENWOOD SPRINGS — State highway crews are scheduled to begin core drilling on Grand Avenue, between Sixth and Eighth streets, today and tomorrow, “weather permitting,” according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

The drilling, which is to take place periodically through Jan. 22, is to intended to determine underground conditions along the right of way, including soil types and structure, bedrock location and density, and water table information, at proposed bridge foundation locations, according to CDOT spokeswoman Tracy Trulove.

Today, crews were scheduled to work between 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m., reducing traffic to one lane in each direction on the Grand Avenue Bridge while the work is being done, specifically to avoid conflicts with the morning and afternoon rush hours.

On Jan. 18 and 19, work is scheduled to go from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and again traffic will be cut to one lane in each direction on the bridge.

From Jan. 20 through Jan. 22, the work schedule is restricted to nighttime hours, from 6:30 p.m. to 3:30 a.m., and again traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction on the bridge.

The drilling work is expected to be completed by the morning of Jan. 23, Trulove reported.
