Good day for Silt bike rodeo

SILT — It was a beautiful spring morning and a good time to brush up on bike safety skills at the annual Silt Bicycle Rodeo held Saturday at Veterans Park in Silt.
The annual bike rodeo, which is sponsored by the town of the Silt and the Silt Police Department, gave kids in grades pre-K through fifth an opportunity to register their bikes, get a free helmet if they needed one and learn hand signals to use when riding in traffic.
“The purpose of this is to interact with the community and give the children a chance to meet the officers in a nonformal environment,” said Silt Officer Karla Scholz. “The officers will do safety checks on their bikes, register their bike in case it is ever stolen and go over hand signals with both skateboarders and cyclists.”
An obstacle course was set up where the kids could ride and practice their safety skills.
Even McGruff the Crime Fighting Dog was on hand at the park, visiting with the kids and answering questions.
A free lunch of hot dogs, chips, a soda and an ice cream was provided through donations from area businesses, and 12 new bicycles were raffled off.
“We’re getting summer started,” Scholz said. “It’s nice to see families come out together.”
