Grant offers resources for military families

For those with family members in the military or veterans themselves, a prevention program has started in Garfield County to get veterans and their families the help and support they need.
Supported by the Colorado Office of Behavioral Health, FOCUS (Families OverComing Over Stress) provides cost free resiliency support to military service members, veterans and their families between Aspen and Parachute.
While the work started with Shelley Evans with Community Health Initiatives, Brad Osborn will help out as new FOCUS coordinator, providing families a prevention program for service members and their families to learn core resilience skills.
"It all depends on need and is based on what the family can do," he said. "If there's a family out in Parachute, transportation to Glenwood may be difficult and we adjust."
The program is customized into six-10 sessions, where families and veterans can learn to identify strengths and challenges, manage and discuss emotions, talk about difficult subjects, clarify misunderstandings and more.
Because of his background in substance abuse treatment, Osborn is prepared and able to assess and work with families beyond the regular sessions, depending on each individual or the family as a whole.

The program was started with Evans with a five-year grant from the Colorado Office of Behavioral Health. It is in its third year out of five.
"The grant was written to make sure that families here will have access to the support they need," Osborn explained.
While managing the program on her own Evans has seen about 12 different clients this year, according to Osborn.
His goal is to see at least 50 people a year.
"I envision eventually having a regular weekly group and after the six-10 sessions of the core curriculum. I want to develop a plan with families moving forward," he added.
