Muriel Dutton

Muriel Dutton, 92, passed away Thursday, April 23, 2015 in Rifle, Colorado.

She was born January 20, 1923 to Earl and Alta Barnes in Salt Lake City, Utah where she grew up with her two sisters.

After high school graduation, she worked at Remington Arms with her father and later as a welder. In 1944, she enlisted in the U.S. Navy (WAVES) where she trained and served in radiology and dental technology. After honorable discharge in 1946, she continued working in the medical field.

In 1949, she married Norman Dutton and moved to the Dutton family ranch south of Parachute where they raised five children. She was considered a ‘newcomer city-slicker’ by the old-timers on the creek, but eventually outlived them all and became one herself, staying almost 66 years.

Muriel was a hard worker with a good sense of humor, who became a rancher. She learned how to drive cattle and put up hay, feed a threshing crew and cook for numerous hunters. In between ranch work, she spent countless hours hauling the kids to their activities. Her son-in-law, Chuck, described her as a ‘beautiful soul’, who cooked the best fried potatoes and venison steaks.

She enjoyed collecting rocks and hunting arrowheads with her family. She was interested in history, enjoyed bird-watching and read all kinds of books up until her passing.

She is survived by her children, Linda of Silt, Teresa of Rifle, Dorothy, Nathan and David of Parachute, 10 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her two sisters, Alta Godwin and Wanda Lundskog, numerous nieces and nephews.

Muriel will be remembered for her good values, hard work, self-sacrificing spirit and ready laugh. She was much loved and will be greatly missed. A private service will be held on the ranch.
