Re-1 welcomes new assistant superintendent

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. The Roaring Fork School District has a new assistant superintendent. The district’s board of education named Brett Gies to take over July 1 as the district’s leader for curriculum. He currently lives in Santa Fe, N.M.Gies has 15 years of educational experience and a doctorate in education.”We are excited to have Brett coming on board. He brings many talents and is someone who is very in tune with the work we are doing in the district,” Superintendent Judy Haptonstall said in a press release. “After reviewing the files of many, many candidates and interviewing many more, the entire hiring committee knew he was the one we had been looking for.”Gies said he was “honored and privileged” to be chosen.”I am so very impressed with the RFSD and the people I have met thus far,” Gies said. “Everyone I have encountered has a real desire to help all students reach their highest level of achievement. I have never met a more savvy, knowledgeable and well-informed team.”Haptonstall praised the work of current interim Assistant Superintendent Pat Henry, a former longtime district principal who served in the curriculum leadership role on a one-year appointment this school year.Gies’ degrees include a Ph.D. in education and a master’s in educational administration, both from the University of Idaho, and a bachelor’s of science in education from Chadron State College in Nebraska. He currently works as the director of research, data, accountability and testing for the Santa Fe Public Schools. His background includes roles as an elementary school principal, sixth-grade teacher and retail store manager.”I truly believe the RFSD is a district the community can be proud of,” Gies said. “It is a progressive district that is well versed in sound research-based practices. I look forward to contributing to and building upon those initiatives. I hope to use my experience to assist teachers in using data and assessments for learning to implement effective teaching strategies that will allow all students the opportunity to achieve at higher levels.”Post Independent, Glenwood Springs Colorado CO
