Another transition for The Citizen Telegram

Many of you likely have heard that Heidi Rice is no longer with The Citizen Telegram or its daily parent, the Glenwood Springs Post Independent.

Heidi brought spirit and real caring for Rifle in her too-short stay as CT editor, and we hope you’ll join us in wishing her the best as you see her around town.

Despite some setbacks in the past year, I want you to know that we are working to gain consistency and improve coverage at your community paper. Rest assured that we are moving quickly to fill The Citizen Telegram editor position.

Rifle and western Garfield County are important to our news coverage. This end of the county is key to all of our economic well-being — whether folks in Carbondale, for example, are as supportive of natural gas as most of you are or not. When the gas patch gets a cold, everyone in the county gets the sniffles, at the very least.

And it’s just a heck of a news town. Some of the best stories of the past year, from Shooters Grill’s rocket ride to fame to Al George’s great fortune — literally — to the Bears’ run for the state football championship, were based in Rifle. We continue our reporting on the flap between Fort Morgan High School’s football team and Rifle’s, which has resulted in the local program being put on restriction.

Western Colorado’s shiniest new thing, the aerial wildfire research center featured in today’s paper, will be at the Rifle airport, and promises to deliver significant spinoff benefits.

We’ll have a new journalist in place in Rifle soon.

In the meantime, email me at ressex@postindependent.com with ideas, questions and concerns.
