PREP ROUNDUP: Titans slip past Indians in season opener
March 15, 2017
Hosting the Montrose Indians Tuesday afternoon at "The Patch," the Coal Ridge Titans' girls soccer team held off the Indians in a 1-0 win to open the 2017 season for the defending 3A Western Slope League champions.
Against the Indians, the Titans played a fairly competitive back-and-forth game for much of the 80-plus minutes. But a goal by junior forward Santana Martinez in the second half would be the tally to give the Titans the season-opening win.
Martinez would find the back of the net off of an assist from fellow junior forward Sam Dunn to put the Titans in front.
In net, sophomore Annie Esgar stopped nine Montrose shots in the win, while the Titans fired 11 shots on the Indian net.
With the win, Coal Ridge sits at 1-0 on the season. The Titans will travel to Kent Denver Friday and Saturday for a weekend tournament, starting with a Friday matchup with Denver Christian at 5 p.m.
HOTCHKISS 14, ROARING FORK 4

At the plate, junior Ralph Good rapped out three hits — all singles, while junior Drew Broadhurst picked up two doubles and one run batted in.
The Rams will look to pick up their first win of the season Saturday morning against the Aspen Skiers at 11 a.m. at Ron Patch Field in Carbondale.
PALISADE 5, GLENWOOD 0
Just three days after upsetting the Steamboat Sailors at home, the Glenwood Springs Demons' girls soccer team traveled to Palisade to take on the Bulldogs Tuesday afternoon, but Palisade junior striker Sami Feller scored four goals in a 5-0 win for the Bulldogs.
Feller scored two goals in the first half and two goals in the second half to pace the Bulldogs, while senior midfielder Kaylin Casto scored the other goal for the Bulldogs off of an assist from Feller.
With the loss, Glenwood falls to 1-1 on the season. The Demons will host Eagle Valley Thursday night at Stubler Memorial Field with kick-off scheduled for 6 p.m.
GRAND VALLEY 7, LAKE COUNTY 0
In the first girls soccer game on the new football field at Grand Valley High School, the Grand Valley Cardinals rolled to a 7-0 win over the visiting Lake County Panthers in Parachute.
