Two killed in Silt motorcycle accident

Staff Report

Two men died of injuries suffered in an accident Monday in Silt involving two motorcycles and a Ford Explorer SUV, the Garfield County coroner said Wednesday evening.

Nathan Russo, 22, of Rifle, died at the scene. Eduardo Medrano, 21, also of Rifle, died at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, where he was flown after initial treatment at Grand River Hospital.

Garfield County Coroner Robert Glassmire said in a news release that the crash occurred at 7:17 p.m. at the intersection of Main Street (U.S. 6) and First Street in Silt.

Russo and Medrano were on separate motorcycles.

The news release offered no details of the accident, saying that Silt police were investigating the crash and would not release further information until after the investigation is complete. The release did say that “impairment is not being considered as a factor in this fatal crash.”

Neither motorcyclist was wearing a helmet.  The driver of the Ford Explorer was not injured.

An autopsy showed that Nathan’s cause of death was blunt force injuries. His manner of death is investigated as an accident.  Eduardo’s manner of death is investigated as an accident and his cause of death is attributed to blunt force injuries of the head.

A GoFundMe page to support the men’s families has been established at https://www.gofundme.com/nathan-russo-family.

Facebook pages indicate Russo is from Glenwood Springs and both men had studied at Colorado Mountain College.
