A hiker on the Jess Weaver Trail on Monday evening reported seeing what appeared to be a suspicious device near an apparently abandoned campsite. The Jess Weaver Trail heads north from No Name into the Flat Tops.
Garfield County Sheriff’s deputies closed the trail to public access until an investigation could take place Wednesday morning. A group of deputies, including two officers from the Grand Junction Bomb Squad and a representative from the U.S. Forest Service, examined the site.
By 12:20 p.m. Wednesday, the site had been cleared. The campsite proved to be nothing more than an abandoned tent with some items in and around it. A small amount of explosives were found near the campsite. The explosives were the type typically used to clear stumps or dislodge rocks on trails or pathways.
It is unclear if the explosives were related to the campsite or how they got there.
Deputies are still investigating the matter with other agencies and regular users of the trail.
