Intro to Garfield County
The Ute Indians were the earliest known settlers of Garfield County. They knew the healing qualities of the hot springs in Glenwood Springs and considered them a sacred place.

Carbondale
Carbondale was founded in 1883 and incorporated in 1888. It was named, like many settlements in the West, by one of its founders. Carbondale was John Mankin’s hometown in Pennsylvania.

New Castle
New Castle, originally named Chapman, was incorporated into Garfield County in 1888. The Welsh and English coal miners who dominated the area in the late 1800s renamed the area for their familiar Newcastle-on-Tyne, a coal mining town in England.

Silt
Silt was named for the light, fine soil in the area, and it prospered as a frontier town for many years. In 1915 it was the last city incorporated into Garfield County and boasted six dry-good stores and two blacksmith shops.

Rifle
Rifle was incorporated in 1905 and now has a population of more than 8,000, rivaling Glenwood Springs in size.

Parachute
Old-timers in the valley might not know what you mean when you talk about Parachute. The town’s name was Grand Valley from 1904 to 1980.
