Girls soccer: Demons’ late run falls just short vs. Sailors

Staff Report

GLENWOOD SPRINGS — Steamboat Springs High School’s girls soccer team had a seemingly safe lead headed into the final 15 minutes of the Sailors’ season-opening game at Stubler Memorial Field. It almost wasn’t safe enough against the Glenwood Springs Demons on Thursday night.

Glenwood, down four goals with 15 minutes remaining, scored three goals in the next 13 minutes but came up just short during its 5-4 loss in the regular-season and Class 4A Western Slope League opener for both teams.

“I emphasized to them before the game how every goal counts,” Glenwood coach Steve White said. “And with this, I feel very encouraged because it showed a new measure of fight in them.”

Hailey Armstrong pulled Glenwood within 4-1 right after halftime, but a breakaway goal from Steamboat gave the Sailors (1-0-0) a four-goal cushion with 15 minutes remaining. That’s when Glenwood made its run, getting goals from Nina Scruton, Grace McSwain and Abby Kruse to pull within a goal with two minutes left.

The Demons, White said, made one final push at the Sailors’ net — to no avail.

“When we got down in that deep of a hole, I said to the girls that we needed just to have a respectable result,” White said. “The girls responded very well.”

Glenwood finished with 18 shots on goal, with eight coming in the final 15 minutes of the game. Freshman Erin Bucchin finished with six saves in her first varsity game for Glenwood, which plays a nonleague home game today against Ralston Valley.
