PARACHUTE — Bumps, bruises, breaks and an insane amount of playing time didn’t seem to ever slow down Grand Valley High School senior Kyra Chenoweth this past girls basketball season.

Chenoweth was one of the big reasons for the success of the Cardinals, who reached the Class 3A state tournament following a fourth-place finish in the Class 3A Western Slope League standings. And it was overall performance of Chenoweth — one of just six full-time varsity players on Grand Valley’s roster — that earned her a share of the league’s Player of the Year award based on a vote from the league’s coaches following the end of the regular season in February.

Chenoweth, who shared POY honors with Moffat County junior Leah Camilletti, headed a full list of Garfield County players who received first-team recognition. Also among the award winners was first-year Grand Valley girls coach Jake Higuera, who was named the WSL’s Coach of the Year. It’s the second consecutive year that the Grand Valley girls program has had the league’s top coach — longtime coach Mike Johnson won the award last season before stepping down.

Very rarely did Chenoweth ever leave the floor this season — not unlike many of her Grand Valley teammates thanks in part to its short bench. Still, no one in the league contributed more.

Chenoweth’s 18.4 points-per-game average wasn’t only the best in the league, but it ranked No. 4 in Class 3A and No. 23 among players in all of Colorado’s classifications. Her best game of the season came on Jan. 10 of this year in a 61-44 Grand Valley victory at Coal Ridge when she scored a game-high 28 points while playing with a dislocated finger on her right hand.

The award is also the second shared POY award of the season for Chenoweth — she was the co-POY for the 3A WSL volleyball past fall with Coal Ridge’s Leah Kanakaraj.

Also earning first-team recognition for Grand Valley was senior post player Jordan Scott and sophomore guard Kylyn Rigsby.

The total number of all-league nominations a team earns is based on where a team finished in the final standings per the league bylaws. League champion Olathe had four first-team award winners and two honorable mentions. Not receiving any all-league awards was Aspen’s girls hoops squad.

Coal Ridge earned two first-team award winners in senior guard Mariela Martinez and junior post player Kaitlyn Detlefsen. The Titans, who finished third in the league standings just ahead of Grand Valley, also reached the first round of the 3A state tournament. Roaring Fork had a first-team player in senior guard Emily Fisher.

Grand Valley junior Allie Dovey earned a honorable mention. Also receiving honorable mentions were Coal Ridge’s Jenny Call and Kyrie’ Foreman along with Roaring Fork’s Cindy Salinas, Ashley Hall and Lyndsay Hansen.
