Roaring Fork High School’s entire student body took a break from school Thursday to serve their community as part of the annual Rams Day.

Groups of students helped out at other area schools, did some spring cleaning and performed random acts of kindness around town. In the afternoon, they were rewarded with games and competitions back at the high school.

Student council came up with the idea in the mid-1980s and it has become one of the school’s longest-running traditions.

“The idea was try to build some camaraderie by getting students to cooperate and participate with students they may not know as well,” said teacher and former Ram Larry Williams.

“I look forward to it every year. I love the school spirit and giving back to a community which has done so much for us.”Bella Bailey Junior at Roaring Fork High School

According to teacher Adam Carballeira, students are surprisingly keen on the idea.

“The kids were super excited,” he said. “They really got it.”

Junior Bella Bailey echoed the sentiment.

“I look forward to it every year,” she said. “I love the school spirit and giving back to a community which has done so much for us.”

While many students hoped to join the group bound for Colorado Animal Rescue, sophomore Katelyn Krehbiel said she enjoyed picking up trash along Highway 133.

“It feels like you’re making a real impact,” she said. “I run this stretch a lot, but I didn’t realize how much trash there is.”

The host organizations got something out of the event, too.

“We get some work done and they get a little taste of what we do,” said Rose LeVan of Sustainable Settings as a group of students helped prep an asparagus patch. “It’s a great way to get to know our youth.”
