All-star girls team sets Little League sights high

Coach Ann Stolley looks to lead her softball all-star team of girls to victory against Grand Junction on July 6.

For the first time this year, the Three Rivers Little League has included the girls in play. Stolley selected girls from the Glenwood, Eagle, Basalt and Carbondale teams to form an all-star team to play in the divisional tournament this summer.

“It was very much a male thing around here,” Stolley said.

Her team of girls has been practicing four to five days a week to prepare. Stolley instilled in them that it’s not “if” they win, but “when” they win.

“If one of the girls say “if,” we’re doing 10 push-ups,” Stolley said. “If it doesn’t happen this year, there’s always next year.”

But she said it would be unbelievable to get through the tournament. After that, it would be the state championships and then in August, it’s the Little League World Series.

In her first year of coaching, Stolley said her coaching style is “visionary.” It’s modeled after the Michigan Wolverine’s softball coach Carol Hutchins.

She said it’s about confidence, not being cocky.

“We intend to do that [to go to state]. We’re pretty confident,” Stolley said. “We have pretty amazing girls.”
