Demons breeze to win at Invitational

Following the diving event at Glenwood Springs High School’s Girls Winter Invitational swim meet last Saturday, the Glenwood Girls found themselves trailing defending conference champs Durango Demons by three points.

But thanks to a resilient bunch, the Glenwood girls topped the seven-team competition by coming back after the diving competition to continue its streak by getting to the wall first in six of the final seven events.

Glenwood recorded 334 points in the invitational, topping Durango (272), Gunnison (176), Summit (115), Aspen (85), Moffat County (52) and Palisade and Central High combined (12).

During the meet, the Glenwood Springs junior swimmers honored the four graduating Demon seniors in a ceremony. Senior Jessica Tuttle will be attending and swimming for the Air Force Academy.

Kendall Vanderhoof will be attending Division III swimming powerhouse Kenyon College in Ohio.

Hannah Stinson is still undecided on her college, but will study premed, and Cheyenne Beightel is also undecided on a college but plans on studying business, according to Glenwood head coach Steve Vanderhoof.

All the girls received flowers and recognition for a successful high school swimming career.

In the meet itself, Sarah Dipangrazio, Lauren Fetzko, Tuttle and Vanderhoof finished first in the 200-yard medley relay, while Vanderhoof finished first in the 200-yard freestyle, followed by Stinson in third.

Competing in the 200-yard individual medley, Fetzko took first place for the Demons, while Dipangrazio added a first-place finish in the 50-yard free.

Tuttle added a first-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly, while Carolin Spaar finished third for Glenwood.

Fetzko followed up here first place in the 200-yard individual medley with a first place finish in the 100-yard Free. Vanderhoof added a first-place finish in the 500-yard free, while Kristin Davis finished second.

Fetkzo, Dipangrazio, Kendall Vanderhoof and Kaitlyn Vanderhoof finished first in the 200-yard free relay.

Glenwood will travel to Grand Junction Friday and Saturday for the conference championships. On Feb. 12 and 13, the Demon swimmers will head to Denver for the State 4A championships.

The girls have qualified for all three relay events, according to Steve Vanderhoof.

Tuttle, Kendall Vanderhoof, Fetzko and Dipangrazio have qualified for multiple events and will have to decide which two individual events that they will swim. Other qualifiers include Davis and Stinson.

There are a few other girls with an outstanding possibility to qualify for the state meet this weekend at the conference championships, according to Vanderhoof.
