Coming off of a sophomore campaign in which he found the back of the net 32 times and dished out a team-high 46 assists — 30 more than the next closest teammate — Glenwood’s Zach Johnson earned a Second Team All-State selection in 4A, adding to his impressive accolades that saw him named to the 4A Mountain League First Team All-Conference squad.

Johnson was part of a tremendous attacking group for Glenwood that scored 97 of the 173 goals scored by the Demons during the 2016 season in which they went 9-6 (6-6 league) overall.

His play as part of that attacking group propelled him to his state selection. That attacking group helped the Demons shatter every school offensive record, including goals in a season, points, shots in a game and a season, while leading the Demons into the playoffs for the first time in program history.

“Zach made a big improvement from last year to this year,” Glenwood head coach Chris “Goose” Henderson said. “He certainly made our team better and was on a great attacking unit. He was a key part of that and was just completely unselfish; just a great teammate overall.”

With the selection to All-State, Johnson becomes the first lacrosse player in program history to make the All-State list, setting a great precedent for a program on the rise.

“This is a great accomplishment for Zach and it’s unusual for our program, especially for a sophomore,” Henderson said. “He’s very committed to the sport. He’s improving every day and staying after practices shooting and throwing the ball around. It certainly shows. He’s a focused player.”

Johnson will head down to Denver Thursday with his family, where he’ll compete in the state game at Denver’s All City Stadium.
