Heads of the Class: Gaddis, Church share WSL’s Player of the Year

It's pretty safe to say that the players who shared girls basketball's Class 4A Western Slope League's Player of the Year honor for the 2013-14 season were pretty indispensable to their teams. That was recognized when the league's coaches voted for them at the conclusion of the regular season last month.

Rifle High School senior Chante Church, along with Glenwood Springs senior Delaney Gaddis, were both recognized as the WSL's Player of the Year when the postseason list of players was released early this week. Also, Glenwood Springs coach Jacky Gaddis was named the league's coach of the year.

Church finished the season as one of the state's leading scorers in Class 4A. Her 19.5 point-per-game averaged ranked her third in Class 4A as of Wednesday, a scoring average that ranked her sixth among players in all of Colorado's classifications. She also shot 74 percent from the free throw line (143 of 194) and averaged six rebounds per game to go with a team-high 54 steals.

The Bears finished with an 11-12 record and reached the second round of the 4A state tournament following an 0-5 start. Church scored 20 points in the Bears' 47-38 first-round victory over Sierra on Feb. 25.

Delaney Gaddis, the Demons' point guard, was among the league's top scorers with her 14.6 point-per-game average. She also finished among the state's leaders in assists and steals, with her 5.3 steals and 5.1 assists leading all players at the 4A classification and higher.

Gaddis, earlier this year, was also named the 4A WSL Player of the Year for volleyball. She helped lead Glenwood's girls basketball team to a 23-2 overall record, a league championship and a berth in the third round of the Class 4A state tournament.

Plenty of Gaddis' teammates earned all-league recognition. Among them were Hailey Armstrong, Jordan DeCrow and Madi Spence on the first team, with fellow Glenwood senior Laura McDermott getting an honorable-mention nod.

Rifle was also well represented. Along with Church, Bears seniors Carsyn Copeland and Kailee Cordova were named to the WSL's first team. Joining them was Rifle sophomore Emily Neuroth, who was given an honorable mention.
