Colorado River cleanup spans from South Canyon to New Castle
April 23, 2014
Boating season is right around the corner, and what better way to celebrate than to give the mighty Colorado River a spring cleaning.
On Saturday, April 26, the Glenwood Springs-based Middle Colorado Watershed Council is hosting its first — of what it hopes will be an annual — river cleanup from South Canyon to New Castle. However, if enough volunteers sign up, the cleanup effort will extend downriver to Silt.
Registration begins at 8 a.m., and a barbecue will be held for participants at noon in Grand River Park on Park Drive in New Castle. There will also be some swag giveaways for volunteers at the barbecue.
Volunteers may clean up on foot in public areas near the river's edge or take their boats out to net some of that hard-to-reach trash.
“The community has been really great, and especially the boating community. Everyone I’ve talked to says this stretch [of the Colorado River] really needs to be cleaned up.”

Anyone planning to help out should dress appropriately for local springtime conditions — rain gear, sunscreen, gloves, long pants, boots and extra warm clothing are a must.
Volunteers will be provided with trash bags and receptacles.
"We're doing this for community engagement," said Jeremy Isenhart, watershed planning assistant at the Middle Colorado Watershed Council. "The community has been really great, and especially the boating community. Everyone I've talked to says this stretch [of the Colorado River] really needs to be cleaned up."
The hope is that the event will swell in coming years, and, eventually, there will be increased access to private land along the Colorado River between Glenwood Springs and Silt.
"The idea, over time, is to get permission from landowners to pick up trash along private banks of the river, too," said Tom Trowbridge of Roaring Fork Anglers.
