Prep roundup: Coal Ridge picks up girls soccer win over Rifle
March 8, 2014
RIFLE — Call it the calm before the storm for the Coal Ridge High School girls soccer team.
The Rifle Bears hung right with the traditionally strong Titans for the first 30 minutes of the season opener for both teams on Saturday, but Coal Ridge finished the match by scoring eight goals in the final 50 minutes on their way to an 8-0 nonleague victory.
"For the first game of the season, we were a little rusty," Coal Ridge coach Micah Herron said. "But overall, I was pleased with what I saw from the girls."
Three different Coal Ridge players — Paige Ryan, Jenny Call and Nicole Mooney — each scored twice for Coal Ridge (1-0-0 overall). The titans didn't go ahead to stay until the 30th minute of the game on Ryan's penalty kick into the lower-righthand corner of the goal.
Coal Ridge also got goals from Aileen Galaviz-Vega and Karissa Feese.
Brooke Esgar and Holly Keesee each had one save in goal for the Titans against Rifle (0-2-0 overall), which lost its season opener at Delta this past Thursday, 3-0.
