Wrecks closed icy Glenwood Canyon for 90 minutes

Two accidents closed Interstate 70 through Glenwood Canyon Saturday morning in icy conditions.

By about 10 a.m., traffic was flowing again, the Colorado Department of Transportation said on Twitter. Westbound lanes were cleared about 25 minutes before that.

I-70’s eastbound lanes had been closed at mile 116 — the main Glenwood Springs exit — and westbound lanes were closed at mile 133 at the east end of the canyon due to accidents.

The Colorado State Patrol public information office said it had a report of a semi collision with a van in the eastbound lanes at 8:15 a.m.

CDOT regional spokeswoman Tracy Trulove said wrecks in each direction just east of the Hanging Lake tunnel forced the closure.

“Glenwood Springs streets are an ice rink,” Trulove said, urging drivers to respect the conditions.
