Garfield County bike trails: Sunlight Mountain Resort

Getting there: From downtown Glenwood, head south on CO-82 to 27th Street. Take a right and follow 27th across the river and to the roundabout. You’ll take the second exit onto Midland Avenue. Remain on Midland for 1.3 miles, then take a slight right onto Four Mile Road. This will take you all the way to Sunlight Mountain Resort, nearly a 9-mile drive. (Love your road bike, too? Try pedaling this one.)

Trail talk: Sunlight is best known for its short ski lift lines and fun terrain, but it’s also a summer destination for mountain bikers. Keep an eye out, though, because you’ll occasionally encounter grazing cattle on the trail.

BABBISH GULCH

Distance: 2.3 miles

Difficulty: Intermediate

The dirt: There’s a lot of climbing on this trail, which ultimately links up with Upper Dipsy Doodle and the Ute Service Road. There are often trail rides in the area, so keep an eye out for horses as you ride.

UTE SERVICE ROAD

Distance: 2.5 miles

Difficulty: Intermediate to difficult

The dirt: One of the resort’s most popular runs becomes an equally fun mountain biking trail in the summer. This doubletrack can be brutal uphill, so you may rely on other means to climb to the top of the mountain, then settle in for the downhill roller coaster ride.

GRIZZLY to SUNLIGHT

Distance: 3.1

Difficulty: Intermediate to difficult

The dirt: From Sunlight lodge, link together these trails to make it to the top of the mountain. The distinction between these doubletrack paths is slight; you might not even notice you’ve made the change. Although it isn’t an easy path, this is the least steep route to the top of the hill.
