2024 North Star Award – Glenwood Springs Citizens’ Alliance

The Glenwood Springs Citizens’ Alliance is an all-volunteer nonprofit formed in 2018 as a voice for the Glenwood Springs community. Its sole purpose is to fight the proposed expansion of the Mid-Continent Limestone Quarry, located on Transfer Trail.

Some promising developments have recently emerged. In January 2024, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management released its Determination of Common Variety report. The report concluded that almost all the limestone mined at quarry over the past five years is classified as “common variety.” That meant Rocky Mountain Industrials, the operator of the quarry, would have to obtain a mineral sales contract from BLM to keep operating.

On Jan. 3, 2025, the U.S. Department of Interior issued a formal decision to implement the Common Variety report. The decision ordered RMI to stop mining, and to pay the government back for the limestone it mined and sold over the past five years.

Work stopped at the quarry. In mid-January, contractors dismantled and shipped out some of the mining equipment at the site. While the quarry is idle, the community’s fight against the quarry expansion is far from over.

Thanks to the steadfast dedication of the Glenwood Springs Citizens’ Alliance, our community remains strong and united in protecting our home. This first-ever Community North Star Award honors their tireless efforts, persistence, and passion — leaving a lasting impact and showcasing the power of civic advocacy.
