Art Blom, of Clifton, recently won first place at the 2015 Rocky Mountain Regional Juried Exhibition for his oil painting — “Downpour.” The event was hosted by Carbon County Arts Guild in Red Lodge, Mont.

“Downpour” was selected for top honors by the judge — Western painter and illustrator, John Potter — from more than 170 entries.

According to Potter regarding Blom’s painting, “…the chill of that rain and the moisture in the air can be virtually smelled and felt. I feel like I am experiencing the dampness itself. The composition leads you into and keeps you involved…with delicious colors and subtle value relationships you would see on a day like this. And even though it’s not necessarily a place that I would want to find myself, I still kept coming back to this painting again and again.”

ABOUT BLOM

Blom’s art education and background began in sculpture.

When he started painting, his sculptural needs were not being satisfied until one day when, out of frustration, he began painting by squeezing paint out of the tubes directly onto his canvas. That event sparked a light that continues to guide his art journey into the expressive impasto paintings for which he is known. Having mastered a personalized palette knife technique, Blom delights in spreading smooth, butter-like oil paint to form his art.

“I paint as a sculptor and sculpt as a painter,” Blom said. “Oil paint is a thrilling medium by which to express myself.”

Themes rise and fall like the seasons in his mind as he paints out his imagination. His art is unique and personal, expressing how he feels, sees, lives and believes.

Blom was also an award winner at the Western Colorado Center for the Arts Member Show this past February. His work can be seen at his studio/gallery in Clifton and at The Blue Pig Gallery in Palisade. This spring, his art can also be seen at the 16th annual Juried Contemporary Exhibit and the U.S. Bank Fine Art Auction at Western Colorado Center for the Arts.
