Aspen Santa Fe Ballet will continue its 20th anniversary celebration into the winter season with performances including “The Nutcracker,” a world premiere from choreographer Cherice Barton and a guest performance of “Shadowland” by Pilobolus.

The local company will perform a new work from Aspen Santa Fe Ballet newcomer Cherice Barton on Feb. 18 and April 1. The Los Angeles artist’s much-lauded choreography for Katy Perry’s Grammy Awards performance gained Barton worldwide attention. Barton’s premiere is a co-commission with the Valley Performing Arts Center in Northridge, California, where Aspen Santa Fe is the dance company-in-residence for two more years. The program will also feature two works that received their company premieres this past summer: Alejandro Cerrudo’s “Little mortal jump” and Jirí Kylián’s “Sleepless.”

The only guest company event of the season will be a one-night-only performance of the groundbreaking “Shadowland” by Pilobolus on March 2. Part shadow act, part dance, part circus and part concert, “Shadowland” tells the story of a teenage girl, longing for independence, who sleeps, only to wake to something incredible lurking behind her bedroom wall — her shadow. “Shadowland” was conceived in collaboration with Steven Banks, lead writer for “SpongeBob SquarePants,” with an original score by composer David Poe.

The season opens with hundreds of young dancers from The School of Aspen Santa Fe Ballet locations throughout the Roaring Fork Valley performing alongside professionals in “The Nutcracker,” which will run Dec. 10 and 11.

All performances take place at the Aspen District Theatre.

Tickets range from $25 to $94 and go on sale to the public on Tuesday, Nov. 1. Tickets will be available online at http://www.aspensantafeballet.com; by phone through AspenShowTix at 970-920-5770; or in person at the Wheeler Opera House box office.
