Steven Fuller has noticed that there are two types of people he runs into around here: those who were born and raised in the valley and those who weren’t.
These two groups serve as the inspiration for “West Slope Story,” an original play written by Fuller and performed by the Rifle-based performance troupe Boomtown Players, which Fuller has been a member of since its beginnings two years ago.
“West Slope Story” is a romantic comedy that shares the inner monologues of a city slicker woman and old-time cowboy.
“Steven Fuller wrote it as a way to show how two very different people in terms of their upbringings can have such similar ideas going through their heads all the time,” said Dylan Fixmer, director of “West Slope Story” and founding member of Boomtown Players. “So what he’s done is he’s juxtaposed the internal monologues of these two characters, so you start to hear and see how even though they’re very different people, they have similar thought processes.”
Fixmer said “West Slope Story” began as bits and pieces that could fit into a variety show, but eventually the group decided the material was strong and cohesive enough to warrant a standalone play. This is the first play that Fuller has written for Boomtown Players without co-writers. He also helped write the group’s first original play, “Cupid Confidential,” and its second, “Lever-Action.”
In addition to producing one original play per year, Boomtown Players perform as an improv comedy troupe and host an open mic night at the Bookcliffs Arts Council in Rifle.
“There’s a lot of music there, and there are people who read poetry and people who do more serious things,” Fixmer said. “But we try to involve as much comedy as possible because that’s kind of our niche.”
Boomtown Players began as a performing arts group associated with ArtillumA, a family-owned arts enterprise based in Rifle.
“ArtillumA Dance brought in all these people around the community and wanted to create some sort of performing arts group,” Fixmer said. “And so we started off by doing a Christmas show with them, and that kind of spurred us into writing our own original shows.”
Before separating from ArtillumA, Fixmer and Todd Sieber wrote their first show together, “Static Reality.” From there, they decided to officially create Boomtown Players to provide original live entertainment for Rifle and the valley.
“We came together because we all loved performance, and we wanted to provide a community theater for Rifle,” Fixmer said. “We felt that Rifle was ready for that kind of thing.”
Fixmer said audiences will connect with the characters in “West Slope Story” as they develop.
“I think audiences are really going to love the characters that are built,” Fixmer said. “They go through a massive amount of transformation and learning.”
The relatable characters and punny humor will make for an entertaining evening, Fuller hopes.
“I hope the audiences enjoy the humor,” he said. “It’s definitely geared toward two specific demographics: people who are from this area and people who aren’t. I’m hoping people connect with it.”
