As of Monday, there’s a new man in my life.

Maybe “man” is a misleading word.

Gene is a 10-year-old cat from Colorado Animal Rescue (CARE) in Glenwood Springs who I’m fostering so he can have a break from the shelter. He was transferred to CARE from another shelter in early March, and because he’s tested positive for FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus), he has a strictly indoors lifestyle and shouldn’t be kept with other cats. That’s perfect for me and my feline-free apartment.

CARE’s fostering program is a fantastic way you can help shelter animals, even if you’re unable to make a long-term commitment to one. I plan on keeping Gene for about a month, giving him a nice break from the kennel life before he finds his forever home.

If you apply and are approved to foster animals, CARE sends you home with everything you need. I was given a litter box and litter, some wet and dry cat food, a cat carrier, a blanket, a bed and toys. Gene ignores most of these luxuries and prefers to lie on my bed or crawl onto my lap.

I can’t say I mind.

Growing up, I had a cat named Shadow. We got him when he was a kitten for my grandma after my grandpa moved into a nursing home, thinking a pet would help cheer her up and make her less lonely. After she moved into a nursing home herself, Shadow ended up with my family.

Shadow was the sassiest cat I ever knew. He was also downright mean at times. He drew blood on everyone in that house at least once, and I only ever saw him show affection to my dad (the one who fed him. Coincidence?).

But I loved that cat’s spunk. He wasn’t the kind of kitty who would hiss and run away when you were invading his space. No, Shadow would just hiss and stare you down, as if to say, “I want to be here in this exact spot, but you need to leave.”

Gene and Shadow couldn’t be more different. In fact, Gene reminds me of a dog. He hops on my lap, doesn’t get sick of petting and even follows me to the door and meows his needy little meow when it’s time for me to leave for work.

Talk about a guilt trip.

I’m really glad I took advantage of this fostering opportunity. If you think it sounds right for you, find out more at http://www.coloradoanimalrescue.org or call 866-947-9173.

Sunday

It’s Father’s Day, and it’s the first day of summer. How lucky is that? Take your dad on his favorite outdoor adventure — whether that’s a hike, bike ride, rafting trip or anything in between. Or just take the day for yourself and enjoy the sunshine. I personally am planning to finally experience Mushroom Rock.

Unrelated to anything, Jessica Cabe would like to publicly celebrate the Chicago Blackhawks’ championship win on Monday. Let’s go Hawks! She can be reached at jcabe@postindependent.com.
