Fruitful harvest on tap at Glenwood Springs Downtown Market

Cherries, apricots and peaches are abundant at Glenwood’s Downtown Market for your favorite seasonal cobbler, muffin or pie recipe.

Two of my favorite cookbooks for fruit desserts are Deborah Madison’s Seasonal Fruit Desserts and Rustic Fruit Desserts by Cory Schreiber and Julie Richardson. The market’s annual pie contest this year will be Aug. 20, so start thinking about your favorite pie recipes or experiment with a wild and crazy new pie concoction.

If you are not a baker, we have a new pie baker at the market this year. Maggie Maloney brings MagPies to Glenwood Springs. Five years ago, Maggie moved to the Vail Valley and rented space in a commercial kitchen. In June last year, she opened her own coffee and tea shop in Eagle. Ever since, she has been sharing her baking talents with customers at several farmers markets in the area. She offers fruit pies, cream pies and savory pies, including chicken and beef pot pies and Aussie meat pies. Returning to our market this year is Holly Pihl. Holly is our gluten free baker extraordinaire. Holly has an art and teaching degree with an emphasis in journalism. She never thought she would be a baker. Fourteen years ago her youngest son, Robby, was diagnosed with autism. A specialist suggested that gluten, a wheat product, and casein, a dairy product, should be removed from her son’s diet. Holly learned to bake all over again. Robby improved dramatically. It has been a long process experimenting with various flour combinations and recipes. Holly likes to play with Southern recipes. They have a good moisture content and use old-fashioned ingredients. Holly says the market customers are so nice and receptive. She loves to watch customers’ reactions to gluten-free desserts. Their preconceptions about gluten-free foods are shattered by her delicious creations. Now she has regular customers each week. It’s hard to pass up her carrot cake, and she sells out most of her desserts and breads by the end of the evening.

Colorado Mountain College cooking instructors Louie and Tammy Girardot will be making arugula salad with grilled apricots and yellow squash topped with a cherry balsamic dressing in the cooking demo tent at 5:30 p.m. Their salad offers yet another great way to use seasonal fruits and vegetables.



Singer/songwriter Caleb Whittington is performing at the market this week from 5:30-8 p.m.

Caleb was born in Indiana and raised in Glenwood Springs. Caleb’s musical journey started as a child listening to his granddad play the banjo with uncles and cousins. He is inspired by Roger Miller, Hank Williams, Elvis Presley, Merle Haggard and Johnny Cash. Caleb’s talents rubbed off on his two sons, who are both playing in Nashville. True Media foundation’s BE HEARD! Bus will roll into the Downtown Market this week. BE HEARD! Is an accredited high school program through Re-1 school district, but all Roaring Fork Valley high school students are encouraged to participate. Students learn to produce media with social value by producing their own talk show, which is broadcast on the web at beheardtv.com. Chris Tribble, the nonprofit’s director, will be serving samples of his famous “Blasian” rice bowls, so stop by to see how you can be part of BE HEARD!
