Glenwood’s Downtown Market will “rise and shine” for its ninth season from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday in Centennial Park, Ninth Street and Grand Avenue. The market will continue for 16 weeks through September.

The season will open with returning growers, Early Morning Farm, Borden Farm and Z’s Orchard. A few past vendors have been successful enough at the market to go on to sell wholesale or open their own stores. Market organizers will miss them but are happy to have helped give them a start. Customers will see new faces and many interesting new market products every Tuesday this season.

A new restaurant named Town has joined The Pullman and Four Mile Creek Bed and Breakfast to bring chefs to the market every week for cooking demonstrations. The cooking demo will start at 5:30 p.m.

This week I’ll give you some ideas and tastes to help you “rise and shine” in the morning with some healthy fresh breakfast ideas. New to the market, Defiant Bean Roasters, a Glenwood Springs coffee roaster, can serve you a taste of their coffee and will have their coffee available by the pound.

Rule 51 in Michael Pollan’s Food Rules an Eater’s Manual is: “Enjoy drinks that have been caffeinated by nature, not food science.” Each week we will continue to highlight a Michael Pollan food rule or make a new cookbook suggestion.

Local singer and songwriter Jim Hawkins will be joined by percussionist Lyn Byars at 5:30 p.m. in the park in the music tent. Jim, by coincidence, has a new song titled “Rise and Shine.” This week, he may have to sing it several times. Sit in the park and enjoy the music under new orange umbrellas. This week’s music sponsor is Sunshine Ridge Guest House.

Glenwood Springs Garden Club’s annual plant sale will be held at the first market. Many of the plants they offer will thrive in local gardens and members can also answer your gardening questions.

Glenwood’s Downtown Market is featured in the new summer issue of Edible Aspen. Copies will be available at the market tent in the park. While at the market booth sign up for our weekly newsletter and produce basket give-away. If you wish to use your credit and debit cards for purchases, come to the market tent and we will issue market tokens to spend with our vendors.

Thanks to Slow Food Roaring Fork the market can double the value of SNAP benefits. We are able to run your EBT card for double the value to be spent at the market. We will run $20 maximum each week for a $40 value. Garfield County is also doubling WIC vouchers for families to purchase produce.

Rise and shine Tuesday morning and make a plan to come to the first market of the season. Park in the new parking structure on Ninth and Cooper or ride your bike and visit our neighbor Sunlight Mountain Ski and Bike Shop for Tech Tuesdays.
