Grand Valley Fashion: Dress up or down for the holidays
Holiday parties are imminent, and dressing for the occasion can be easy with these fun (and local) tips. Businesses like June Ruby (537 Main St., Grand Junction) and Men’s Wearhouse (2424 U.S. Highway 6 & 50, Grand Junction) offer outfits that fit any budget and style.
Whether it’s a cocktail hour or meeting friends at the bar for a holiday happy hour, dressing casually is the norm for the Grand Valley.
“You can make any outfit festive with a little sparkle,” said Barbara Walsh, co-owner of June Ruby.
At June Ruby, one shirt is especially glittered, the Velvet by Graham & Spencer Cai sequin chiffon top for $136, which can be paired with a pair of skinny jeans in blue or white. Keep it casual by wearing a pair of flats to match, like the Black Yosi Samra fold-up ballet flats, which sell for $40. The outfit can be finished with some bling on the wrist and neck, and some dangling earrings.
Another way to dress is down, but still be festive, is to wear a cardigan, like June Ruby’s Plenty by Tracy Reese cardigan for $136. Combine the cardigan with a black undershirt, a pair of black slacks and black heels. To finish the look, add a scarf and earrings to match.
Other trending items to pair with outfits include hats, gold jewelry, and leather.
“Hats are super cute, and many designs feature glitter pieces,” she said. “It’s so fun.”
For the guys, heading from work to a party could mean just a simple pocket-square change. Men’s Wearhouse’s assistant manager Castillo Zamora said it’s bringing in those festive colors that really make the outfit.
“To dress up a casual shirt just throw on a cashmere blend sweater, and it instantly creates festive attire,” Zamora said.
For casual outfits, pairing jeans ($60-110) or khakis ($40-110) with a casual button-up shirt ($70-80) and wearing a nice dress shoe ($85-130) and funky socks ($10) works perfect for the casual man. Another way to dress up a casual outfit is to throw on a sports coat ($100-300) and a pocket square ($10) to include mixed texture and color.
Adding a bow tie ($20-50) may dress up an outfit a bit more.
DOLLED UP GAL
According to Walsh, June Ruby’s main goal is to dress the working woman. When going from work to celebration, Walsh suggests keeping a bag handy filled with festive earrings, necklaces, bracelets and dressier shoes.
“It makes it easy to change from work to party and can be as simple as changing jewelry,” Walsh said.
For example, a woman may wear a black pencil skirt, a glittered blouse, a black blazer and simple black heels to work. After work, grab the festive purse and simply remove the blazer, put the hair back, add some gold hooped earrings and a flashy bracelet.
“Any of our working outfits can be dressed up and used for a holiday party,” Walsh said.
Another outfit that works well from work to party is the velvet, long-sleeved, round Virida dress in red ($162).
Fun fact: June Ruby offers locals 20 percent off their purchases.
DOLLED UP GUY
When it comes to heading to a fancier party, wearing a suit of blue or gray works best.
“For holiday wear in suits, it’s all about the accessories,” Zamora said. “Adding a festive color of red or green makes the outfit fit the bill.”
With a blue suit ($300-1,000), pairing it with a brown shoe ($85-130) and silver button-down shirt ($50-100) with coordinating tie really brings the outfit together. Add a silver pocket square ($10) and you’re ready for a party.
Another fitting suit would be in silver, matched with a red shirt, a red and silver tie, and festive pocket square to tie in the whole ensemble.
