Redstone’s Magical Moments Summer Concert Series 2014 kicks off with Gigi Love from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Redstone Park.

To make it even more worth the trip to Redstone, Front-Rangers the Lionel Young Band will play blues at the Crystal Club Cafe from 6:30 to late. Young is a blues violinist.

There is one notable change to the concert series this year. “It’s a big deal. It’s the first time we’ve had a stage,” said Lisa Wagner, who has been putting the series on largely by herself for more than a dozen years.

The portable stage is 12 feet by 12 feet, and at 2 feet high it should be easier for people farther from the bands to see the action.

Although the bands aren’t the only thing worth seeing. Concert-goers will also be treated to a view of Mount Sopris behind the stage.

Thanks to Wagner’s efforts drumming up sponsors, all concerts in the series are free, and she did well enough this year to add a concert.

Why would she put herself through so much trouble year after year for no compensation? “I love music and I love where I live,” she explained.

Attendance at the concerts is about 150 per show. To encourage more participation, Wagner said, “It’s a family venue where you can bring dogs and children. The adults can listen while the kids play, or just have a picnic and listen together.”

Series opener Gigi Love is from Utah, but she comes to the series after a chance meeting with Wagner in Hawaii. While the rest of the concerts are on Saturday, Wagner said she made an exception to do a Friday concert to match Love’s schedule. Love plays bluesy, Americana songs that are inspired by her life of travels. Her voice is said to be her not-so-secret weapon.

To round out a busy opening weekend, from 6-9 p.m. Saturday, valley divas The Starletts share their synergy of Motown, soul and rock with of hint of jam.

Jay Roemer played the series last year as part of Steamboat Springs band The Old Town Pickers. He travels similar ground on his own, playing bluegrass, folk and country music from 6-8 p.m. July 12.

Redstone favorite Kraig Kenning plays his slack key guitar from 6-8 p.m. July 19. From Chicago by way of Florida, Kenning has played in Redstone for several years and will be playing the Crystal Club Cafe again this year on July 25-26.

From 6-8 p.m. on July 26, the music is as local as it gets as the Historic Redstone Band will back up the Redstone Rubies for a decade of music from Motown to classics.

Beatles tribute band Doctor Robert has already had a busy schedule in Glenwood this summer, playing Music on the Mountain on May 23 and the Downtown Market on June 18, and the band is also scheduled to play in Basalt on July 2. The prefab four play Redstone from 6-9 p.m. on Aug. 2

Kort McCumber played Magical Moments solo last year and returns as half of Moors and McCumber from 6-8 p.m. on Aug. 9. The duo sing harmony while playing Americana, blues, bluegrass and Celtic.

Closing out this year’s series from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Aug. 30 is Bonnie and Her Clydes, playing a Colorado country blend of the ’30s and ’40s with a mix of western swing, country boogie and honky tonk of the ’60s and ’70s.
