Live like a local: Mo Maznio’s guide to Garfield County

Carla Jean Whitley

Mo Maznio may be a native New Yorker, but she’s long made her home on Colorado’s Western Slope. After two years in Vail, she moved to Glenwood Springs in 1982 and relocated to New Castle in 1996. Her business, Mo Hair, remains in that town, but Maznio now calls Canyon Creek home base.

In addition to making Garfield County more beautiful in her salon, Maznio makes it tasty, too. She’s the creator of Mo’s Molicious Mustard and is currently working on two new flavors, sriracha and habanero.

Breakfast

“Rosi’s Bavarian Inn (141 W. Sixth St., Glenwood Springs, rosisbavarian.com) is off the beaten path, but worth it. Or New Castle Diner (820 Castle Valley Blvd. #101, New Castle, newcastlediner.com); I love that David tries to keep it local as much as possible, including offering my own, locally made product, Molicious Mustard!”

Lunch

“19th Street Diner (1908 S. Grand Ave., 19thstreetdiner.com). The food is always great, and the staff is so friendly! Long been a locals’ favorite. Of course Doc Holliday’s (724 Grand Ave., Glenwood Springs) and the Springs (722 Grand Ave., Glenwood Springs, facebook.com/Springs-Downtown-Bar-Grill), they are both so iconic with all the history, and the food is great. In New Castle, Elk Creek Mining Company (502 W. Main St., elkcreekmining.com) or, for the best pizza ever, Hogback Pizza (457 W. Main St., hogbackpizza.com), now featuring a new outdoor seating area for good weather fun.”

Dinner

“You cannot go wrong with Juicy Lucy’s (308 Seventh St., juicylucyssteakhouse.com) or Smoke (713 Grand Ave., smokemodernbbq.com) in Glenwood. Black Dog Saloon in New Castle (219 W. Main St., thedognewcastle.com, pictured) is great for more of a pub feel, or Miner’s Claim in Silt (740 Main St., Silt, theminersclaim.com) has a fantastic atmosphere.”

Clothes

“I mostly do sports wear: Factory Outdoor (2828 S. Glen Ave., Glenwood Springs, factoryoutdooroutlet.com) or Treadz (812 Grand Ave., treadzshoes.com). I love to repurpose, so Lilly’s in Glenwood (715 Grand Ave.) or Miser’s in Carbondale (303 Main St., facebook.com/misers-mercantile) are great. Quality items.”

Gifts

“Speckled Feather in New Castle (820 Castle Valley Blvd. Suite 201b, speckledfeather.com) features local artisans and offers all kinds of classes.”

Music

“Black Dog Saloon features music most weekends and local talent one day a week. The Ute Theater in Rifle (132 E. Fourth St., Rifle, utetheater.com) has been attracting some really great talent. In Glenwood, the Vaudeville Theater (915 Grand Ave., gvrshow.com) has had some awesome acts as well.”

Bar

“19th Street Diner and Black Dog Saloon are our favorite places to frequent.”

Free time

“I love to spend time cooking, reading, plenty of time with family and getting outdoors. I try to hike our beautiful valley nearly every day. Skiing, back country or on my favorite mountain, Sunlight (10901 County Road 117 , sunlightmtn.com). I love to go camping or just hanging out at the hot springs.”
