TRTC’s Lon Winston creates theater scholarship

Lon Winston, founder and executive director of Carbondale’s Thunder River Theatre Company, has established a new scholarship for high school students planning to study theater in college.

The Lon Winston Theatre Arts Scholarship will award $1,000 every year to a local high school student. The first scholarship will be awarded in May, and the deadline to apply this year is March 31.

“Establishing a scholarship is important to me personally to encourage young people to study the performing arts,” Winston said. “Part of our mission is to keep the heritage of live performance alive in such a technical world.”

The student must live in the Roaring Fork Valley, from Aspen to Parachute, and be recommended by his or her drama teacher or director. Applicants must prepare an audition or present a portfolio for set, costume or light design. They must also submit three letters of recommendation from their high school teachers focusing on their academic and personal attributes, and they must have been accepted to a university, college or conservatory.

The scholarship recipient will be chosen by a committee of professional theater artists from the valley. For more information, email or call Lon Winston at 970-963-8200.
