1887 Blake Avenue School a building worthy of its youth

Willa Soncarty

Glenwood Springs has historically attempted to provide the best education possible to its young citizens.

In 1887, the new, two-story Blake Avenue School was a formidable structure. It was built of light-colored brick, and its mass and architecture promoted the feeling of permanence, stability, safety and seriousness. Its electric lighting, steam heating and full basement made it a very modern building for its time. It was constructed at a cost of $26,000.

One of the local newspapers reported weekly on the activities at the new school, its teachers, and the progress of the students grades 1-12. The editors of the paper knew that the future of the community depended on the quality of education that its youth received. The newspaper lauded the accomplishments and announced the failings, publishing everything from honor rolls to tardiness.

That responsibility is just as important today as it was more than 100 year ago when the Blake Avenue School was built.
