3 injured in accident on 82, heavy fog a likely suspect

Thick fog that blanketed parts of the midvalley Tuesday night probably played a role in an auto wreck that injured three people and killed a dog, according to investigating police officers in Basalt.A woman in a white Honda sedan pulled onto Highway 82 from East Valley Road and into the path of a westbound Toyota pickup, according to the preliminary accident report. The accident occurred about 9 p.m.”There was really thick fog at the time,” Basalt Police Chief Keith Ikeda said. There was extensive damage to the front of the pickup. The driver and one passenger were taken to Aspen Valley Hospital, one with serious injuries, according to the report. Names and addresses of the occupants weren’t available Wednesday, but authorities said two men were in the truck. The Honda was driven by a Denver woman, whose name wasn’t available from Basalt police. She was taken to Valley View Hospital with serious injuries after the truck hit the right front of her car, Ikeda said. Both vehicles were heavily damaged. Air bags were deployed and it is believed all occupants were wearing seat belts. Ikeda said authorities do not suspect drugs and alcohol were a contributing factor. The woman’s condition had been reported as stabilized but she was airlifted to another hospital Wednesday morning, Ikeda said.Rescue workers said a dog that was hauled in a carrier in the Honda died in the crash.Police officers and rescue workers reported extremely icy conditions to go along with the fog Tuesday night.
