Gaylon Kent: We deserve better than fighting wars perpetually
We deserve better.
We deserve better than the partisan, fractured and bickering government we have now, and we deserve better than an America that is perpetually at war and mindlessly in debt. Our choice this election is to either continue to tolerate the status quo or to announce to the world that Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District is demanding better this Election Day.
Let’s be honest, though, no Republican or Democrat is going to deliver a better America. If they were, they would have done so by now. You know it, I know it, and they know it, too. All the status quo promises us is more war and more spending, and America can afford neither of these things because, eventually, they will destroy our country, perhaps before this half-century is out. Anybody who tries to tell you America can survive perpetual war and mindless debt is either deluding themselves, trying to delude you or, as likely as not, both.
An America perpetually at war has produced a violent world and violent American citizens. Our planet and our nation both deserve to see the world that would be produced by an America at peace. We have been at war every day since 1989, almost 30 years, an entire generation. No nation has survived perpetual war, and America will not be the exception to that.
As your congressman, I will only support wars that have been declared by Congress. This is specified in the U.S. Constitution, though Congress has not declared war since 1942. I also support a flat tax of 5 percent that would give us a tax cut, a one-page tax return and simplify a 9 million word tax code that confuses even the IRS. I favor eliminating the tax on corporate profits, too, because that is merely an expense businesses pass on to us.
Friends, we deserve better than the nonsense and chaos of the government we have now, but nobody is going to give it to us: We must go and get it on Election Day. The government we want and deserve is there for the taking Nov. 6. All we have to do is demand it at the ballot box.
There’s an old saying: If not us, who? And if not now, when?
This could be the theme of the 2018 midterms because the time has come to say, “enough.” The time has come for us in Colorado’s 3rd District to announce to our state and our nation that we are demanding better this Election Day. The time has come for us to stop throwing rocks at the castle from across the moat and for us — you and me, we the people — to cross the moat and take the castle.
My name’s Gaylon Kent, and I’ll lead the charge. I live with you here in our beautiful Yampa Valley, and like you, I want an America we can be proud of and an America the world looks up to again.
So, let’s go get it Nov. 6.
Colorado 3rd Congressional District Libertarian candidate
