50,000 pills found in man’s trunk
VAIL – A man was traveling through Vail Friday with 50,000 drug tablets hidden in boxes of laundry detergent that had been glued back together, Vail police Commander Susan Douglas said.The boxes were found in Juan Carillo’s trunk after he was pulled over for speeding around 11:30 a.m. Friday on I-70 in East Vail, Douglas said.Carillo, 29, who is from California, allowed officers to search his silver 1996 Honda Accord after he was given a ticket for going 75 mph in a 65 mph zone, Douglas said.A drug dog from the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office alerted officers to Carillo’s trunk, where they found the two boxes of detergent, Douglas said.The bottom of the boxes appeared to have been opened previously and glued shut, Douglas said.The tablets were bundled in plastic wrap, Douglas said.Carillo and his passenger, Jose Herrera-Carillo, 27, of Mexico, were arrested for unlawful possession of materials to make methamphetamine, a felony, Douglas said.
