A new look for Friday football coverage

Fall is just about here, and that means football.

Third-string quarterback extraordinaire Tim Tebow and the Broncos are about to kick off their season, as are the CU Buffs, CSU Rams and my beloved Indiana Hoosiers (I hope they can at least beat Ball State).

On the local fields, high school ball hits full stride tonight.

Glenwood Springs is at Basalt, Roaring Fork at Hotchkiss and Coal Ridge at Eagle Valley. In Parachute, Grand Valley and Rifle will square off.

We’re lucky here in the Roaring Fork Valley. We have all sorts of great football in our backyard.

While that’s a very good thing, it also adds to my job’s degree of difficulty. Balancing coverage between five schools is no easy task and, try as I might, I can’t be everywhere at once.

Contrary to what many seem to believe, the ability to clone myself is a superpower I have yet to master.

Every fall, without fail, I get a few emails or voicemails questioning my coverage decisions.

“Why do you cover [insert school here] so much?”

“You don’t care about [insert school here]!”

Where am I going with this? Well, the Post Independent’s coverage of high school football is going to be a little bit different this fall.

With a new, earlier deadline and a one-man Post Independent sports department, most weeks will feature in-person coverage of a single game and a box with scores from the action elsewhere.

Simply put, comprehensive coverage of games I can’t physically attend probably won’t make it into Saturday’s print edition due to the time constraints I’m facing.

Once the print deadline hits, however, I will put together recaps of all other action for immediate posting at http://www.postindependent.com. We’ll also publish those recaps in Sunday’s print product.

This isn’t an ideal situation, but my aim is to continue to provide the most comprehensive football coverage possible. It’s just going to take on a slightly different form, so be sure to bookmark http://www.postindependent.com.

I’ll also be tweeting score updates whenever possible on Friday nights (depending on Internet connection availability or the strength of my cell phone signal), so be sure to follow @GSPIsports if you’re a Twitter user.
