GLENWOOD CANYON ” A series of accidents on Interstate 70 just west of the Shoshone Power Plant closed one westbound lane of the highway for about 45 minutes Thursday afternoon.

Sgt. Mason of the Colorado State Patrol said that 10 cars were involved in a succession of accidents in which five drivers were cited but only minor injuries were sustained.

According to Mason, the first accident occurred at 3:36 p.m. as a car lost control on the slushy road, hitting the railing and coming to a stop facing the wrong direction.

Five cars stopped behind this accident, one of which was rear-ended by another car, triggering a four-car accident as cars slid and banged into each other.

Three cars stopped behind the four-car accident. Another car lost control, struck one of these cars, stopped, and was subsequently hit by another car.

The trouble stopped after one more two-car accident.

Another car traveling east stalled out across from the accident scene, though eastbound I-70 remained open, according to Resa Dennie, a supervisor at the Colorado Department of Highway’s Hanging Lake Tunnels facility.
