Affordable housing meeting tonight

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. ” A public meeting is scheduled for tonight to discuss affordable housing and to draw attention to the lack of affordable housing in the valley.

The meeting is set for 7 p.m. at St. Stephen’s Church in Glenwood Springs.

Congregations and Schools Empowered (CASE) has invited elected officials from Parachute to Aspen, to participate in the discussion. Others, who are struggling to live in the area due to the high rents or housing prices, will share their stories. The town hall meeting is intended to bring people together over this issue.

Organizers will also ask mayors and county commissioners to work with CASE.

Tom Ziemann is director of Catholic Charities in the region and an organizer with CASE. He said the group purposely does not use the word “affordable” in reference to housing.

Local governments require that new housing developments contain affordable units. But the majority of homes that are being built in the valley are not affordable to much of the area’s population.
