After rash of burglaries in New Castle, police urge residents to lock their cars

Heidi Rice

A rash of car break-ins have occurred all over New Castle in the past couple of months, and police are warning residents to lock their cars and remove all their valuables.”We’ve had more vehicle break-ins in the last two months than we’ve ever seen,” said Sgt. Anthony Webb of the New Castle Police Department. “A lot of the vehicles have been unlocked, but a lot have not.”Webb said the thieves are taking anything of value that they can see in the car and the crimes are being committed in broad daylight as well as at night.”We’ve had them in the City Market parking lot and the (New Castle SuperBowl) bowling alley,” he said. “But they’re happening all over town.”State law prohibits leaving a car unattended with the keys in the ignition, but Webb said leaving the keys in the car also invites prospective thieves. Even if the car is locked, visible valuables might prompt a thief to break in by smashing a window.”People have to realize they must take responsibility for the valuables in their car,” Webb said. “Lock your car and take the valuables out.”Police have no suspect in the crimes at this time. Those with information should call the New Castle Police Department at 984-2302.
