Ag use should get water preference

George Chandler

Dear Editor,

In my opinion something is drastically wrong when people raising cattle have their irrigation water cut off and others still have water to put on their lawns and parkways!

Our ditch was adjudicated to our allotment on June 26 and cut off completely July 13. So the cattle we are raising have the grass that is in the field now. Hopefully it won’t dry all the way out before they get it eaten. And then what? In the meanwhile, every time I drive up Castle Valley Boulevard there is watering going on, and on and on. Just about any time of the day or night, I have seen it running in the same areas for hours and hours, and running down the gutters and the bike path. Since this is not farmland anymore I cannot see why the water right that went with the area should not be changed to give those still trying to farm priority. That right should be changed to let the new users have domestic water only. Period. That is all the water we have now; we cannot use our domestic water right in the fields! And the town of New Castle is putting in new planters with plants and shrubbery that need water.

All the while the building goes on. Planners, you’d better wake up! Guess I didn’t mention that I live on East Elk Creek, the New Castle water supply.
