All eyes on Potato Day celebration

The 97th annual Potato Day celebration, themed “Super Spud Roundup,” takes place Saturday in downtown Carbondale. The event features a Farmer’s Market, barbecue, live music, rodeo and the annual parade down Main Street. • During the Potato Day weekend, the Carbondale Center on the Arts and Humanities hosts the “Strike the Hammer” art show and demonstration celebrating blacksmithing in the Roaring Fork Valley. The show opens today in the CCAH gallery as part of the First Friday art walk. Blacksmithing demonstrations with 16 artists take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in Sopris Park.• Top off Potato Day by watching or participating in the Bareback Bonanza, a horseback-riding event with poles, barrels and some wild antics at Gus Darien Arena. Kids ages 10 and younger can participate with saddles. Registration for the event starts at 2 p.m., and riding starts at 3 p.m. New events include mutton bustin’ for the kids and wild cow milking for the cowboys, along with the pig race.• KDNK will hold its annual record and CD sale at Potato Day beginning at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Sopris Park. Rare-recorded gems, vinyl, CDs from all genres, and electronic equipment will be sold at reasonable prices. Call KDNK to donate music at 963-0139.
